The barbell back squat is an advanced version of a squat where the athlete rests the bar and weights across the back of the shoulders and squats. This exercise targets the muscles of the posterior chain, including: low back, hamstrings, and glutes. The core and quads are also engaged. The back squat can help improve the athlete/lifter’s ability to run, jump, and push from a performance standpoint. In addition, it can help provide strength and muscle definition to one’s back side: including hamstring and quad definition, butt lift, and improved overall lower body appearance. Because of the position of the bar on one’s back, risks of injury can be high. To reduce the risk of injury, this course will address common faults a person may experience when doing this lift and provide ways to make it more safe.
